A director at the Serie A outfit has addressed talk of a move being made for a World Cup-winning midfielder once he becomes a free agent

Lazio director Igli Tare remains coy on the club’s reported interest in David Silva, but left the door open for the Spaniard to take on a “different experience” in Italy once he severs ties with Manchester City.

The World Cup-winning midfielder is approaching the end of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. Silva will be leaving City once their participation in the 2019-20 Champions League comes to a close, with the 34-year-old becoming a free agent.

Various landing spots have been mooted for the modern day great, from MLS to La Liga. Serie A is also considered to be an option for the talented playmaker, with any number of sides willing to buy into his undoubted ability.

Lazio are said to have registered their interest, with the Roma-based outfit piecing together plans for the summer transfer window.

Tare is reluctant to be drawn on the rumours suggesting that a deal could be done at some stage, but he is not ruling anything out either.

He told Sky Sport Italia when quizzed on the Silva speculation: “I don’t know where these stories come from. He’s a great player, of course, and I have heard from some mutual friends that he would like a different experience after 10 years in England, but there’s a big difference between saying something and making it happen.”

For now, Lazio are more concerned with enhancing those already at their disposal. That includes Golden Shoe winner Ciro Immobile, with the 30-year-old frontman – who netted 35 Serie A goals in 2019-20 – considered to be integral to the club’s plans.

Tare added: “We will build Lazio around Immobile because he has a long contract and is an important figure in this club. He’s had an exceptional season, but the team played for and with him too.

“Lazio are in the Champions League after 13 years, now we are studying initiatives to bring the club even higher with Immobile a key figure.”

Lazio still have one game left to play this season and, despite stumbling out of the blocks on the back of the restart in mid-June, are guaranteed to secure a top-four finish as they sit 11 points clear of arch rivals Roma in fifth.
